Mental Health Support in Schools, Colleges and Universities

If all teaching staff at your school, college or university were asked what an acceptable number of suicides would be, the answer would almost certainly be zero. We believe that's exactly the right ambition — and that it's achievable.

At The Jordan Legacy, we work alongside education settings to build psychologically safe environments where every student and staff member can thrive.

What we believe

Discover Our Vision →

"Most kids looked up to Jordan. He was fiercely loyal and would always stand up for the underdog, publicly confronting bullies or those who would mock others."

Why does suicide prevention in schools matter?

Statistics published by the young person's charity Papyrus show that approximately 200 school children die by suicide every year in the UK, and a separate study found around 100 university students die by suicide each year.

With an average of 135 people who knew the young person affected by each death, that's more than 40,000 people impacted every single year. Behind each number is a classroom, a corridor, a family. Most of these deaths are preventable — and everyone in your school community can play a part.

How can The Jordan Legacy support our school?

We help heads, teaching staff and wellbeing teams understand what they can do to improve student wellbeing and reduce the risk of suicide. Our support includes:

  • Talks for schools on topics like having difficult conversations, spotting when someone is struggling, and signposting support
  • Collaboration with wellbeing teams to introduce age-appropriate wellbeing, mental health, suicide prevention and postvention strategies
  • Policy reviews — considering how internal policies and procedures affect the wellbeing of students and staff
  • Events, workshops and conferences that raise awareness and give practical guidance
  • Tailored sessions delivered by The Jordan Legacy's approved partners, designed specifically for your school, college or university

What can our school do today? Five practical actions

Here are five easy-to-implement actions your school, college or university can start taking today:

1. Share two key messages with everyone:

"Anyone can be affected by suicide" and "Everyone can help prevent suicides."

2. Train your leaders.

Ensure all heads and heads of department or faculty receive mental health and suicide awareness training, with at least two trauma-informed and certified in mental health and suicide prevention: Living Works ASIST / Suicide First AID (SFA) /

safeTALK by Grassroots Suicide Prevention.

3. Encourage all teaching staff and assistants to take

the free, NHS-approved, 30-minute online training from the Zero Suicide Alliance.

4. Install the R;pple Suicide Prevention tool

on all PCs and laptops that students and staff can access - click here.

5. Signpost clearly.

Make sure teachers, staff and students know how to reach your setting's wellbeing services — and encourage them to use them.

What if a student or colleague is struggling right now?

Don't wait. Our I'm Worried About Someone page explains the warning signs, how to ask directly about suicide, and how to listen. If someone needs urgent support, share our I Need Help Now page, or Papyrus HOPELINE247 on 0800 068 4141 for anyone under 35.

For wider information and signposting, visit our Help & Resources pages. Together, we can make suicide in education settings an increasingly rare event — and give every young person the psychologically safe place to learn that they deserve.
